A full re-roof, done before winter
The roof was leaking in several places, and with winter on the way the customer decided now was the time to act. We stripped the old tiles back to the rafters and rebuilt it from the bottom up.
The new roof is a breathable membrane and new battens, topped with Marley Ludlow Major tiles. The hips are finished with a dry ridge and hip system, so there is no mortar left up there to crack.
We enjoyed this one. You see the whole job go from start to finish.
Both photos were taken from the scaffold at the same corner of the roof. The framing is close rather than identical.

A roof leaking in several places
A roof that leaks in one place is usually a repair. This one was leaking in several, and with winter on the way the customer decided now was the time to act. The old covering was faded red interlocking tile, mossed along the hip and with at least one cracked tile in view. Once it was stripped there was nothing left up there but the rafters and the loft insulation underneath. That is the point where you can see exactly what you are building on. It is also why we take a roof like this right back rather than lay new tiles over the old.
- Faded red interlocking tiles, mossed along the hips
- Leaks in several places rather than one
- Stripped to the bare rafters before anything new went on
Stripped back, KinsonWhat is under the tiles
Most of what makes a roof last is hidden once the tiles are on. Here it is a new Proctor Air breathable membrane laid straight over the rafters, with new battens fixed on top. The membrane sheds any water that gets past the tiles and lets the roof space breathe. The tiles are Marley Ludlow Major, laid over those battens in the same hipped shape the roof had before. The hips are dry-fixed. A hipped roof carries a lot of mortar along its hips, and mortar is what cracks. With a dry ridge and hip system each tile is clipped in place instead, so there is nothing to crumble or fall out.

The specification on this roof, item by item.
Stripped to the rafters
The old tiles came off completely, so the roof was rebuilt from the timbers up rather than covered over.
Proctor Air breathable membrane
New over the whole roof. It sheds anything that gets past the tiles and lets the roof space breathe.
New battens
Fixed over the membrane and set out to suit the new tile.
Marley Ludlow Major tiles
The new covering, in dark brown, laid in the same hipped shape as before.
Dry ridge and hip system
Each hip tile is clipped in place instead of bedded in mortar, so there is nothing to crack.
Vent pipes taken through
Two come up through this roof. The new membrane and tiles were worked round them.
