What we found when we got up there
The customer called us about leaks, and they were not subtle ones. Water was getting in badly enough that this was never going to be a case of putting a few tiles back. The roof was plain tile laid over close-boarding, which is a construction you still find on plenty of older Poole houses. The boards themselves were doing a job, but the covering above them had reached the end of its life and the felt underneath had nothing left to give. Once we were up there the shape of the roof turned out to be the interesting part. Four hips, which means four runs of hip tiles all bedded in mortar and all cracking, plus roof windows in the bedrooms with flashing kits that were past it. And a flat roof joining onto the main roof, which is the sort of junction that causes trouble on any house and needed doing properly rather than patched around. So the honest answer was a full strip rather than a repair, and we said so with photographs to back it up.

Proctor Air breathable felt
New membrane over the whole roof, replacing felt that had perished. It sheds anything getting past the tiles and lets the roof space breathe instead of trapping moisture.
New treated battens
Gauged to the new tile. The old battens came out with the old felt rather than being reused under a new covering.
Marley Modern tiles
The new covering, laid to manufacturer specification from the eaves up.
Dry ridge on four hips
A roof with four hips has a lot of mortar in it, and mortar is what cracks. All four runs were finished with a dry ridge system, fixed mechanically so there is nothing to work loose.
New roof window flashing kits
The bedroom roof windows got new flashing kits. A roof window is a hole in the roof, and the kit around it is what stops that being a problem.
A 15 to 20 year guarantee
Issued on completion, as on every roof we install.
How the seven days ran
Scaffold to clear site, on a house with four hips and a flat roof junction.
Scaffold and delivery
Scaffold up first, then the tiles, felt and battens to site so the job could run straight through without waiting on materials.
Strip
The old plain tiles and perished felt came off in sections, and the close-boarding underneath was checked while it was exposed.
Felt and batten
Proctor Air breathable membrane over the boards, then new treated battens gauged to the Marley Modern tile.
Tile
Laid from the eaves up, course by course, working around the roof windows and the flat roof junction.
Hips, flashings and windows
Dry ridge on all four hips, new flashing kits fitted to the bedroom roof windows, and the flat roof junction detailed properly rather than sealed over.
Clear up and guarantee
Scaffold down, waste away, ground swept and the guarantee issued. Seven days in total.
