A customer who had already paid to fix this twice
The thing that makes this job worth writing up is not the work. It is that the customer had been here before. They had two old chimneys that had been deteriorating for years, and they had already paid for repairs on them more than once. Every time, the stacks got patched up and every time the problem came back, because a chimney that has genuinely gone does not get better with pointing. By the time we were called, the question was not really how to repair them. It was whether they needed to be there at all. Neither flue was doing anything. They were two pieces of tired masonry at the highest point of the house, letting water in, and generating a repair bill every few years for the privilege. So the honest recommendation was to take them down rather than repair them a third time. That is not the answer that earns the most from a customer over their lifetime in the house, and it is obviously the right one.

Taking a chimney down is the easy half. This is the other half.
Scaffold first
Proper access to reach both stacks. Taking masonry down at roof level is not something anyone should be doing off a ladder.
Both stacks removed
Taken down to below roof level and the masonry brought off the roof rather than dropped down the outside of the building.
New timber where they had been
A chimney leaves a hole in the roof structure. That gets framed properly so what goes over it has something to be fixed to.
New felt and battens
Fresh membrane and battens across the openings, tied into the existing roof so water runs over the repair rather than into it.
Tiled over to match
The finished roof runs through where the stacks used to be. Done properly, you should not be able to tell there was ever a chimney there.
Waste taken away
A chimney is a surprising amount of brick and rubble. All of it went with us rather than sitting in the garden waiting for a skip.

Taken down course by course to below roof level, with the masonry brought off rather than dropped.
The openings framed
New timber across the holes the stacks left, tied into the existing roof structure.
Felt, battens and tiles
New membrane and battens over the openings, then tiles laid to run through with the rest of the roof.
Waste away and scaffold down
Rubble removed, the ground swept and the scaffold struck. One day from start to finish.
