Why Poole roofs are two different jobs
Poole is really two towns as far as a roof is concerned, and they need different things. The first is the old harbour town. Poole was a serious trading port for centuries, shipping to Newfoundland from the sixteenth century onwards, and in the eighteenth century it had more ships trading with North America than any other English port. That money built the Georgian merchant housing you still see near the quay, alongside buildings like the Custom House of 1781 and the Harbour Office of 1822. The town centre conservation area is currently on Historic England's At Risk register, so anything down there comes with constraints as well as weather. The second is everything built since. The suburbs spreading north and west, Oakdale among them, are post-war concrete interlocking tile, and those roofs are now at the age where the tiles go porous and the felt underneath perishes. That is the work we do most of in Poole, and the Oakdale re-roof in our projects is exactly that job. The common factor is the water. Roofs near the harbour take salt-laden wind from the open side, and salt is hard on nails and fixings. It is a slow effect rather than a dramatic one, and it shows up as slipped tiles and lifted ridges earlier than you would expect inland.

We come and look at the roof
On an exposed Poole roof we pay particular attention to the fixings and the ridge, because salt-laden wind finds those long before it finds the tiles.
Scaffold goes up and materials arrive
Wind matters here more than most places. Scaffold on an open aspect needs sheeting and tying properly, and we will not strip a roof on a day the forecast says we should not.
The old roof comes off
We work in tighter sections on exposed elevations, so there is less roof open at any point and it can be made watertight quickly if the weather turns.
New felt, battens and covering go on
Proctor Air breathable felt and new battens. On exposed roofs the fixing specification matters more than the covering, and we set it to the elevation rather than to habit.
We clear up and hand it over
Site cleared, waste away, guarantee issued. The Oakdale re-roof ran seven days from scaffold going up to the site being clear, which is typical for a house of that size.

Does being near the water actually affect my roof?

Then it is worth checking what applies before anyone quotes. We do not take on listed building or heritage roofing, so if yours is listed we will tell you straight away and point you at a specialist rather than waste your time.
My ridge tiles keep coming loose
Common on the exposed elevations here. Mortar bedding cracks anyway with age, and wind finishes the job. Converting to a dry ridge system fixes each tile mechanically so there is no mortar left to fail.

Does salt air really damage a roof?
It is hard on metal rather than on the tiles. Nails, fixings and clips corrode faster near the water, which is why slipped tiles and loose ridges show up earlier on exposed Poole roofs than they do inland. It is gradual, not sudden.
My house is in the Poole conservation area. Can you work on it?
It depends on the property. We do ordinary domestic roofing, and we do not take on listed building or heritage work at all. If yours is listed we will say so on the first visit and point you towards a specialist rather than take the job on.
How much does a re-roof cost in Poole?

Why do the roofs on my street all look the same age?
