RoofersinWimborne

Our team is based in Bournemouth and travels to Wimborne regularly. A medieval town centre wrapped in modern housing, and those two halves need very different roofers.

  • Both owners on site, so the people quoting are the people doing the work
  • We will tell you if the job does not need doing
  • British Standard materials, fitted to manufacturer spec

Wimborne is two towns, and we only do one of them

It is worth being blunt about this before you go any further, because it will save you a phone call. The Wimborne Minster conservation area contains 164 listed buildings. Three are Grade I, including the Minster Church of St Cuthburga itself, five are Grade II* and the remaining 156 are Grade II. The historic core is centred on the medieval Minster and much of what surrounds it carries 18th and early 19th century facades. We do not take on listed building or heritage roofing. Not reluctantly, and not for the right price. It is skilled conservation work with its own consents and its own specialists, and we would be the wrong firm for it. If your property is listed, or you are unsure whether it is, we will tell you on the first visit and point you towards somebody who does that work properly. The other Wimborne is the one we do work in, and it is most of the town by area. The modern housing that has grown around the old centre is ordinary domestic roofing: tiled roofs, extensions, flat roofs over garages, guttering and roofline. That is our work, it is what we do every day, and none of it comes with a consent application attached.

  • 164 listed buildings sit inside the conservation area, and we do not work on those
  • The modern housing around the old centre is ordinary domestic roofing, and that is ours
  • If you are unsure which yours is, ask us and we will tell you straight

Owners on every job

How a Wimborne job runs

The same five stages everywhere. The first thing we establish here is whether we are the right firm at all.

We come and look at the roof

Before anything else we establish whether the property is listed or inside the conservation area. If it is listed, we say so and step aside rather than quoting for work we should not be doing.

Scaffold goes up and materials arrive

Access on the modern estates is straightforward. Closer to the old town the roads are narrower and the scaffold needs more planning, which we sort before the start date.

The old roof comes off

Stripped back to the rafters and the timbers checked while they are exposed. Where the covering is being matched to neighbouring property we set a sample aside first.

New felt, battens and covering go on

Proctor Air breathable felt and new battens, then the covering. Matching matters more in Wimborne than most places, so we show you the tile before it is ordered.

We clear up and hand it over

Site cleared, waste away, guarantee issued. On the tighter roads that means getting the skip and the scaffold away promptly rather than leaving them a week.

What Wimborne customers ask us

Almost always about the conservation area, and rightly so.

  • How do I know if my house is listed?

The national list is public and searchable, and the council can confirm it. If you are not sure, tell us and we will check before quoting. Being inside the conservation area is not the same as being listed, and the two have different consequences.

  • My house is in the conservation area but not listed

Then we can usually help. Ordinary repairs and like for like replacement are generally fine, but changes to what is visible can need consent. We will tell you where we think that line is and suggest you confirm with the council before ordering.

  • Why will you not do listed work?

Because it is a different trade. It carries its own consents, its own materials and its own specialists, and doing it badly damages a building that cannot be replaced. We would rather say no than be the firm that learnt on your roof.

Roofing questions from Wimborne

Do you work on listed buildings in Wimborne?

No. There are 164 listed buildings inside the Wimborne Minster conservation area and we do not take on listed or heritage roofing at all. If yours is one of them we will say so immediately and point you towards a conservation specialist.

My house is in the conservation area. Can you still do the work?

Usually yes, if it is not itself listed. Repairs and like for like replacement are generally fine. Anything that changes the appearance can need consent, so we will flag where we think that applies and suggest you check with the council before we order materials.

Do you cover the villages around Wimborne?

Yes, we work across the area rather than only in the town itself. Tell us the postcode when you call and we will confirm.

Can you match the tiles on my house?

We get as close as the range allows and we show you the option before ordering. Matching matters more in Wimborne than in most places we work, because mismatched tile is noticed here.

How much does a re-roof cost in Wimborne?

It follows the size and pitch of the roof and the access. Modern estate housing is straightforward; property closer to the old centre often needs more thought about scaffold and parking. We come and look, then give you a written figure.

Do you come out at night or at weekends?

No. We do leak repairs and make-safe work during the working day, and we would rather tell you that than have you waiting on someone who is not coming.

Other towns we cover

Wimborne and Ferndown are our two inland towns. These are the rest.
