Why guttering is worth taking seriously

Guttering is the cheapest thing on your roof and it causes some of the most expensive damage in the building. A gutter that overflows does not drip harmlessly onto the garden. It runs down the wall, soaks the brickwork, and keeps that patch wet through every wet month of the year. Inside, that shows up as damp on the wall of whichever room sits behind it, and it usually gets blamed on rising damp or condensation. Outside it shows up as green staining, brick faces spalling after a hard frost, and pointing washing out. All of it from a blocked outlet or a length of gutter hung slightly the wrong way. The work itself is not complicated. New runs where the old ones are past it, realignment where the falls are wrong, downpipes taken somewhere sensible, and clearing them out so they keep doing their job. What matters is doing it to a fall rather than by eye, and putting the brackets where they should be.

A real fall to the outlet

Gutter has to run downhill to where the water leaves. Level or backfalling gutter holds water, gets heavy, sags further and overflows at the joints.

Brackets at the right spacing

Gutter that sags between brackets ponds and pulls at its joints. Bracket spacing is a specification, not a matter of what looks about right.

The fascia behind it checked

Brackets screw into the fascia. If that timber has gone soft from years of overflow, new gutter on the same board will sag again within a couple of years.

Downpipes taken somewhere sensible

A downpipe discharging onto a path or against the wall is doing half a job. It wants to reach a gully or a soakaway.

Water run through before we leave

The whole run tested so you can see it drains. It takes ten minutes and it is the only way to prove the falls are right.

Mostly whether it needs replacing at all. Often it does not.

Does it need replacing or just clearing?
Often just clearing, and we will tell you that even though it is worth a fraction as much to us. Plastic guttering lasts a long time. What fails first is usually the bracket spacing or a blocked outlet.
Do you need to get into the garden?
Yes, along the run, and we will need access to the downpipe at ground level. If there is a gate or a dog, tell us when you book.
Can you match my existing gutter?
Usually. Most domestic guttering is a standard profile and colour. If yours is an older or unusual size we will tell you before ordering rather than turning up with the wrong thing.

What your guttering is telling you

What a blocked gutter actually costs you

Clearing a gutter is the cheapest job on this website. Not clearing it is one of the most expensive things you can do to a house, and the bill arrives years later attached to something that looks unrelated.

Here is the sequence. Moss washes off the roof and collects in the gutter. Leaves land on top of it. The run stops draining and holds water permanently, which is weight the brackets were never designed to carry, so the gutter sags. Now it holds even more, and it overflows at the joints.

The overflow runs down the wall. Brick is porous, and a wall that gets soaked every time it rains never fully dries out through a British winter. Inside, the room behind that wall develops damp, which usually gets diagnosed as rising damp or condensation and treated accordingly, at some expense, without anyone going outside to look at the gutter.

Meanwhile the timber directly behind the gutter, the fascia and the ends of the rafters, is the closest thing to a permanently wet gutter. It is also the part nobody inspects, because you would have to take the gutter off to see it. That is how a two hour clearing job turns into a roofline replacement.

The frost does the rest. Wet brick that freezes spalls, which means the face pops off, and washed out pointing follows. None of this is dramatic and none of it happens fast, which is exactly why it gets left.

Once a year is enough on most houses. More often if you have trees close by or a lot of moss on the roof, because both fill gutters far quicker than leaves alone. It is the single cheapest thing you can do to protect a building, and it is the thing most people skip.

So if you call us about damp on a wall, the first thing we will ask is what the gutter above it is doing.

Questions about guttering and downpipes

My gutter overflows. Is it blocked?

Usually, but not always. It can also be the fall running the wrong way, brackets spaced too far apart so it sags and ponds, or an outlet undersized for the roof area feeding it. Running water through it tells us which.

How often should gutters be cleared?

Once a year is enough on most houses. More often if you have trees close by or a mossy roof above, because both fill gutters far faster than leaves alone.

Does the whole run need replacing?

Often not. Plastic guttering lasts a long time and what usually fails is the bracket spacing, a joint or a blocked outlet. We will tell you honestly if a clear out and a realignment is all it needs.

Can you match my existing guttering?

Usually, yes. Most domestic guttering is a standard profile in a standard colour. If yours is an older or unusual size we will tell you before ordering anything.

Should I do it at the same time as the fascias?

Almost always. The gutter has to come off to replace a fascia anyway, so putting new guttering back costs very little more than rehanging the old one, and the falls get set correctly.

Do you fit gutter guards?

We can, and they help on a house with heavy leaf fall. They are not a substitute for looking at it though. Guards themselves collect debris on top, so they still want checking once a year.

Where should my downpipe discharge?

Into a gully or a soakaway, not onto a path or against the wall. A downpipe emptying at the base of your brickwork moves the problem from the roof to the foundations.
